Question 3 Scripts

Here are the scripts for my question 3 response as I understand that it can sometimes be difficult to understand Voki and there is often an issue with it cutting out.

Question 3 Part 1

Our initial target audience was teenagers,
mostly those who have recently finished school
and are going on to pursue careers and such.
This is a mass target audience as students all around
the world are finishing school and will be taking
their steps into the world as an independent adult and will
be facing the issues that go with this.

We do arguably have a second target audience which would
still be teenagers, however, it would be those who are in the
lower years of school and are undergoing the usual pressure put
on by teachers and being told that what they do in school over
the years they're there will determine how the rest of their life will be,
and the song that we chose may be a way to provide either
reassurance or perhaps a more friendly piece of encouragement for
them to work hard and try their best.

Question 3 Part 2

Our target audience did, to a large extent influence how
we constructed our texts, mainly due to the fact that
we tried to maintain a relatable style whilst still portraying serious
issues throughout. We attempted to attract our audience
by using elements that the audience would find relatable
and maintain the same style throughout.
In reflection if I could change something about our task
I would add a more serious element to the issues raised as I personally
feel that they are presented as themes that should be taken lightly
when i don't personally believe that is the case.

Due to the SD card in the camera running out of space, the end of the discussion in the video is cut away. As such, from the point of the video and audio cutting out the discussion continued as follows: 'even though some of the things that are being discussed within the song are actually serious matters that affect a massive amount of people and as such, some would argue that they shouldn't be presented in such a light hearted and carefree way.'.

Music Video Influences

One of the main influences for ideas and designs was that of the "All american rejects" hit single "move along" which featured fast cutaway editing of the lead vocalist Tyson Ritter singing stationary while each few frames begins alternating clothes. This was the main idea that sparked to our music video due to its connection to the lyrics "living my life in second hand clothes, which implies he only ever wears second hand clothes. To incorporate build on this pattern the band used we inserted the idea of alternating clothes in existing ideas for scenes except reacting the scene 2-4 times in different costumes then cutting them together such as the jump scene. Next we thought how clothes can define the image of a character so for lyrics involving specific character traits i.e. "too rich" "too poor" we dressed in both shoddy scruffy clothing with other poor associated props or dressed smart and pristine. And finally lead to the concept of money and its struggles which became one of the narratives angles to develop around.

List of technologies used

For our CD Digipack, we used two separate programs, one for the front and back covers, and one for the insert booklet. We used Photoshop and Illustrator by Adobe to create the CD digipack ancillary task. We chose to use a different program for the booklet (Illustrator) due to the ability to create several pages in one file, rather than in Photoshop in which several files would have to be made in order to make individual pages.

We used YouTube to upload our music video main task as well as other videos that we have created alongside our main task as research and/or planning. We used YouTube so that we were able to keep track of what we had produced and also so that others could find it easily with out channel name.
The majority, if not all of our editing was done with Adobe's Premiere Pro program. We used this primarily due to the fact that it was the only program that we were able to use at school. We also used this program due to its ability to incorporate different file formats into one video, thus increasing compatibility when using other programs for production (Photoshop, After Effects etc).
Blogger was used by all member of the group to keep track of everything we have done and keep all of our data in an accessible place to allow to to view what has been done and what needs to be done in chronological order.
Tripods were used in a large amount of the shots filmed for our music video in order to maintain a stable shot and avoid shakiness when filming freehand,
We used a DSLR camera due to its ability to capture video in a high resolution along with it being able to differentiate between colours in shots much better than handheld camcorders that were also on offer. We also used the DSLR camera due to its ability to take stills with clarity. Both of these functions combined into a small, portable unit made it an obvious choice for us. We used this for every shot we captured in our production (both video and images).

CD Digipack/Album

For part of our A2 coursework, as well as creating a music video, we have been asked to make a 'CD Digipack' as part of a package to go with our music video. For this task the group was split in two, with me and Sam contributing to our own digipack, and Tom and Joe contributing to their own. As such I will only be discussing the digipack that was created by both me and Sam since that was the only one I contributed to.

For both our front and back covers we used Photoshop to manipulate images, add text and add effects.

Front Cover

Our front cover was designed by Sam and drawn by the two of us by hand in Photoshop with various tools including the paintbrush tool, pencil tool and pen tool amongst others. The idea of the cover is to essentially represent the struggles of the people present in the music video by adding subtle features like an old TV and a crooked aerial, as well as broken beer bottles and a baseball bat beside the TV. On the TV there is an image of the three young men from the music video stood side by side.

Here is the design we made for the front cover. As you can see we made reference to several things that were present in the actual music video, for example, the baseball bat which is supposed to be reflective of the one used in the music video by Joe. We also used the beer bottles at the side of the TV and also the exam paper with 'F' marked on it as references to aspects of the music video.

Back Cover

Our back cover consists of a photo taken whilst filming of the three actors in the music video leaning against a wall. We decided to edit the photo and take another hand drawn approach to manipulate the image to show the outlines of each persons features (clothing, skin etc.). We also chose to take out a portion of two of the actors bodies and have the brick wall behind them with only the black outline remaining. We chose to do this to maintain a style throughout as well as making the image more interesting and eye-catching than just a simple photo. Once again we used Photoshop to manipulate this particular image and add things that we thought would look aesthetically pleasing.

Here is the back cover that we have produced. I chose to add an outer glow effect to the text using the 'Blending Options' menu so that the text would stand out and not have any colour issues with the background, potentially making it not visible. We chose to maintain a house style throughout all of our covers and such and decided to include similar features throughout.

Insert Booklet

We chose to use a twelve page booklet so that it was possible for us to include all of the songs that are listed on the back cover of the album. For the pages we chose to use pictures that we had taken of graffiti art that was around the location where we filmed some parts of our music video.
as you can see, all the songs that are present on the back cover of the album are present within the booklet along with the lyrics to those songs. we chose to maintain a similar style throughout all aspects of the CD Digipack/Album so that certain things did not look out of place and they were all related to one another in some way.
